Package Holidays: Better Or Worse?

Package holidays used to be incredibly popular, but they’ve fallen out of favor a bit in recent years. There are still some good deals out there, and people are still using them, though not nearly as much. Is that because they just aren’t as good as booking directly? Well, it isn’t quite that simple, there are good arguments for both types of holiday. It depends on your situation and what deals are available a lot of the time, but package holidays can certainly work in your favor, as can direct booking. For anybody out there that’s struggling to choose a holiday, here are some pros and cons of package holiday deals.

One of the main attractions of booking a package holiday is that it takes away a lot of the stress. When you are booking directly, there are lots of little things to think about, like car hire or insurance. It can be easy to forget some of the smaller details when you’re trying to juggle everything at once. With a package holiday, you don’t need to worry about that, somebody else will sort it all out for you and you’ll just make one payment to the travel agent.

Most people tend to think that package holidays are a lot cheaper. This is quite often true, but not always so be careful. Having all of your food and drinks included will make it a lot cheaper when you are out there, as you won’t need anywhere near as much spending money. On the other hand, you might not want to eat at the same place every day. If you do decide to eat elsewhere, you are effectively paying twice for your meals.

Getting last minute deals is often easier with package deals. If there are places that need to be sold, travel agents will offer them at massively reduced prices. This is one way of getting a last- minute budget holiday.

Less Control

That brings us onto the main con. You have a lot less control when booking a package holiday. The flights and hotel will all be booked, and you will be paying for all of your food and drink at the hotel. A lot of people can end up feeling like they spend more time sitting around in the hotel because they feel they should make the most of the all-inclusive package. However, not all package holidays are like this. Places like offer custom made package holidays so you can reap all of the benefits of package holidays without any of the downsides.

You can also be a lot more flexible on the dates when you are booking independently. Most package holidays will only offer certain times, usually during school holidays when it is more expensive. The majority of people will probably go away during these periods, but if you don’t have kids, you can usually save a lot of money by going away during the off season. If you opt for package holidays then this probably isn’t an option.

To sum up, package holidays can be great if you book last minute for discounts, or opt for a custom built one that suits your needs.
