Road Trips: the Ultimate Last-Minute Budget Holiday

Friday, April 21, 2017

When you think of last-minute holidays, you might think of flying out to somewhere nearby like another city, a beach or something relaxing. You might also consider taking a train to a comfortable rural location, or you might consider driving to a nearby luxury hotel to spend a few nights pampering yourself before returning to work.

However, planning those trips as a last-minute thing can be quite expensive. Booking hotels anything less than a week in advance is difficult and expensive, and last-minute flights are often limited and you won’t have much choice to pick from without paying several times more for a ticket. So why not try a road trip? It’s safe, fun, you can take your friends, and it costs a fraction of a plane ticket. But what’s in it for you? Here are a couple of reasons why your next holiday should be closely related to a road trip.

It’s fun and easy

There are no long check-in times, no plane transfers and no waiting around. If you love driving (or have a friend that likes it) then all you need is a car or a truck and a full tank. It’s worth studying a defensive driving traffic school online before you set off, however. Safety is an issue no matter what destination you pick, but if you’re going to be driving long distances then it’s important that you learn about driving safety. Once you’re confident in driving for long periods of time, it’s time to pack your bags, pick a destination and drive off into the sunset.

Walk the road less traveled

One of the problems with last-minute holiday breaks is that they usually have an associated theme. For instance, flying off to a tropical location usually involves lots of sun, sand, partying and music. If you plan a trip to a rural area, then you’ll most likely be eating fresh food, hiking and relaxing in a field somewhere.

When you take a road trip, there are no pre-conceived notions. Instead, what you see is what you get, and what you make of it depends on what you want to do. If you see a mountain trail, then you could stop off at a local motel and go hiking. If you notice there’s a casino or fancy hotel coming up on your map, then you could stop there for the night and explore the local area. Do you see a lovely view up ahead? Drive over and take some pictures to upload to social media later and set up camp to stay the night. With a road trip, you get to pick your own entertainment and you’ll get to explore anything you want.

Cheaper than a typical holiday

With no expensive travel fees, no extra costs paid on booking hotel rooms and no fancy food to buy, a road trip is the ultimate budget holiday. Your food will most likely consist of whatever’s open around midnight, you won’t be paying exorbitant prices for a hotel because you’ll likely just stop off for the night, and you only need to pay for petrol to get around. All in all, it’s a wonderfully cheap holiday but still, manages to offer you fun and relaxation just like any other break.
